Botox Treatments

Uses

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a widely used medical treatment for chronic migraines and muscle spasticity. While many people associate Botox with cosmetic procedures, its medical applications rely on its ability to block chemical signals between nerves and muscles or pain-sensing fibers. We at Direct Neurology provide Botox treatment for below mentioned indications. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Botox for Chronic Migraine

Botox is FDA-approved specifically for chronic migraine, defined as having 15 or more headache days per month (with at least 8 being migraines) that last 4 hours or more.

How it works

Unlike other treatments that stop a migraine once it starts, Botox is a preventive treatment. It enters the nerve endings around the injection sites and blocks the release of chemicals (neurotransmitters) that transmit pain signals to the brain.

The Procedure

  • Injection Sites: Doctor typically administers 31 small injections across seven key muscle areas: the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck, and upper shoulders.

  • Frequency: Treatments are usually scheduled every 12 weeks

  • Results: It often takes 2 to 3 treatment cycles (6–9 months) to feel the maximum benefit. Many patients see a reduction of 8–9 headache days per month.

Botox for Spasticity

Spasticity is a condition where certain muscles are continuously contracted, causing stiffness or tightness. It is common in people with stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, or spinal cord injuries.

How it Works

In spasticity, the brain sends too many "contract" signals to the muscles. Botox blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical that tells muscles to tighten. This allows the muscle to relax, improving range of motion and reducing pain.

The Procedure

  • Injection sites: Commonly injected muscle groups are in upper (elbow, wrist, fingers) and lower limb spasticity (ankles, toes).

  • Frequency: Treatments are usually scheduled every 12 weeks

  • Results:  Usually appear within 1–2 weeks and last for 10-12 weeks. It is most effective when paired with physical therapy to stretch and strengthen the relaxed muscles.

  • Important Note: Patient with history pre-existing neuromuscular disorders (like ALS or Myasthenia Gravis) are at an increase risk of serious side effects with Botox administration.
